Promotional Bookmarks are very clever when you are trying to promote a book that you have written.  The bookmark may be used as a teaser or incentive before a person has purchased the book or they may be given or sold to a person who is in the process of buying the book as a goodwill item or as a reward.

Here, for example is a set of bookmarks that promote a book entitled Ginger.  The ones on the right are laminated and the ones on the left plain cardstock.

As you can see the book is offered by the author for $15 and may be purchased from him or from his publishing company.  In this case the author is producing a set of bookmarks that will be distributed by the Brittany division of the American Kennel Club and makes available the book Ginger at discount through that organization.
