Symbols in a general sense are the rudiments to our language, they are the marks made for the recognition of others and for ourselves and they exist in archeological records even predating human history.  A symbol is more than a pictograph (an image representing only its likeness) and a little less than an ideogram, where for example, a dollar sign ($) represents the same thing to all observers.

Symbol means:

1. Something that represents something else by association, resemblance, or convention, especially a material object used to represent something invisible. 2. A printed or written sign used to represent an operation, an element, a quantity, a quality, or a relation, as in mathematics or music.

As an example of a symbol that has different meanings for different people or uses consider the following:

28:03

With its point downward the equilateral triangle adopts a negative spectrum of meaning. In alchemy it represents water, the passive element. With a line, 22:9or 39:13, it becomes the element of earth. In both the US and the British systems of hobo signs it means spoiled, too many have been here. As a traffic sign it means give way to crossing traffic.
Even in the astrological system of elements 28:3stands for water, and in certain meteorological systems it is used to denote rain showers, although it is more common to use the single-axis symmetric triangle, 22:1, for this meaning.

An upside down triangle to a hobo may mean one thing  and to a scientist something entirely different.  Feel free to follow the hyperlinks to the left to investigate more about symbols on a web page dedicated just to symbols.

3:1 · The Latin cross, crux immissa, crux capitata. The latin word crux is derived from "cruciare", meaning to torture. This cross since at least one thousand years has been the Western world's symbol par excellence. It is chiefly associated with the torture and killing of Jesus Christ, and thus with the Christian religion and Christianity.
